Hayate was the first Japanese destroyer lost in battle during the Second World War, sinking at Wake Island. Submarines and aircraft subsequently sank five more ships of the class, with another submarine loss in 1945. Only Kamikaze and Harukaze are counted as survivors at the war's end. These losses came to a class whose construction and commissioning extended across the early and middle 1920s.

Kamikaze ships from Wake Island to war's end
Hayate's loss at Wake Island and the class's wartime losses give the interwar design a later service context.
