Chapter ยท 1:18-3:18

Why the protectorate has to start early

The counterfactual starts in the early Hawaiian Kingdom, before American missionary and commercial influence becomes too entrenched.

Notes

The original protectorate question supplies no date, so the counterfactual first needs a workable starting point. The Hawaiian Kingdom came together in 1810, which rules out Cook's arrival or any earlier contact as the point of divergence for the united kingdom. Missionaries from the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions and growing commercial interests subsequently increased American influence. A later British commitment would therefore create growing friction with the United States, even before American forces could challenge Britain in the Pacific. British policy eventually settled against acquiring Hawaii, so the diplomatic opening did not remain available indefinitely. These constraints lead the scenario to 1824.
