Chapter · 2:56-8:15

Hawaii's geography and Pearl Harbor's supporting infrastructure

Hawaii's fresh water, central position, and natural harbor made Pearl Harbor a fleet-support hub whose value depended on sustained infrastructure investment.

Notes

Hawaii offered fresh water and a central organizing and replenishment point in the vast Pacific. Pearl Harbor added a sheltered anchorage with a narrow entrance, defensible space, and room for supporting facilities. Japanese observers tended to overestimate American investment because the base's potential made heavy development seem strategically obvious. That mismatch shows why geography alone does not create an effective naval base. Docks, runways, supplies, and durable infrastructure still have to be funded and built.
