The Harwich Force, especially its destroyer flotillas, provided a deeper foundation for later doctrine than the usual Jutland lesson suggests. Its Channel-defence mission demanded that light craft delay and punish a German advance even at severe cost. That mission encouraged an offensive approach in which manoeuvrable small ships could exploit darkness against heavier forces. Commodore Reginald Tyrwhitt's aggressive command culture made maximum speed, gunfire, and torpedo attack normal expectations rather than exceptional risks.
