Hopkins becomes Roosevelt's personal channel to Churchill

Hopkins's travels and emotional pledge reveal the intimacy of the Anglo-American channel while small errors expose how the story was retold.

Notes

Hopkins spent much of his British mission beside Churchill, travelling to Scapa Flow and dining with him repeatedly. The account's description of Scotland as England and its confusion of the official residence Chequers with Churchill's private home Chartwell warn that details changed in transmission. The prolonged access nevertheless made Hopkins an ardent advocate of Britain's cause and gave Roosevelt a direct impression of Churchill's resolve. A biblical pledge of solidarity conveys the emotional force attributed to the relationship. The most theatrical detail, tears streaming down Churchill's face, may be another embellishment without invalidating the alliance beneath it.
