Known as 'Hard-Over Harry,' DeWolf made HMCS Haida a notably aggressive Tribal-class destroyer. Haida served on Arctic convoys and with the 10th Destroyer Flotilla in Channel operations around Operation Overlord, once pressing through a minefield because the enemy lay beyond it. The ship sank 14 enemy vessels in a year. DeWolf earned the Distinguished Service Order for rescuing survivors of HMCS Athabaskan within range of German coastal guns, and knife marks attributed to him remain visible on Haida's bridge wood. His later rise to chief of the Canadian naval staff shows how destroyer command could lead into senior institutional leadership.
