Harlech's 1294 siege and Irish sea supply

Food bought in Ireland reached Harlech and Aberystwyth by sea during the 1294 revolt, sustaining castles under siege.

Notes

Madog ap Llywelyn began a revolt against English rule in 1294, and Harlech was besieged along with Criccieth and Aberystwyth. Over winter, food bought in Ireland reached Harlech and Aberystwyth by sea. The crossing of the Irish Sea provided a quick and efficient route when the castles were under pressure. Harlech's water gate allowed that seaborne provisioning to support its defenders. Siege endurance depended on access to food as well as the strength of the walls.
