Gatehouse, moat, and the landward approach

The landward side shows how the gatehouse, moat, and change in elevation kept even Harlech's closest approach difficult to cross under fire.

Notes

The landward approach comes closest to the height of Harlech's rock. Even on this side, a large moat and a substantial gap stand in front of the gatehouse. Reaching the entrance requires a difficult crossing or climb before an attacker can confront the gatehouse defences. These obstacles explain why the apparently easiest side of the site would still be difficult to assault.
