Hansa rescues a liner before leaving East Asia

Hansa pulled a grounded German liner free and towed it to Nagasaki, a practical assistance mission within her overseas naval service.

Notes

Near the end of her East Asian service, Hansa assisted a North German Lloyd liner that had grounded in the Philippine Sea. The cruiser pulled the vessel free and towed it to Nagasaki, using naval power for commercial rescue rather than coercion. Such assistance protected German shipping and demonstrated the practical value of a station cruiser far from home. Hansa then received orders to return to Germany, where she was decommissioned and converted into a training ship. The tow ended her overseas career with a useful hull whose combat design was already judged too dated for frontline service.
