Hanno repeatedly opposed Hamilcar Barca's appointments and plans. His own African territories were rich, and he preferred further conquest there to naval war against Rome. He helped drive the demobilisation of the Carthaginian navy in 244 BC. That gave Rome breathing space to rebuild after storm losses and other setbacks. Rome returned to win the war in 241 BC. Domestic interests had helped dismantle naval capacity while the conflict was still underway.
