Why Hakodate mattered beyond Hokkaido

Hakodate is introduced as the final campaign that helped decide Japan's political future and the early career of Togo Heihachiro.

Notes

The Battle of Hakodate belonged to the wider Boshin War and had consequences beyond its naval action. In this interpretation, the campaign prevented a lasting division between imperial Japan and the Ezo Republic on Hokkaido. A young Togo gained early wartime experience in the operations that culminated there, linking the battle to the later rise of the Imperial Japanese Navy. The victory also helped determine which political coalition would shape modern Japan. That coalition politics fed the later rivalries among Japan's navy, army, diplomats, and civilian leaders.
