Early in her career, Haida joined the Home Fleet's Arctic convoy cycle. During the Battle of North Cape, she screened one of the convoys bound for Russia while other forces engaged Scharnhorst. Her destroyer group stayed between the merchant ships and the battleship's expected approach, ready to attack if it broke through. Some destroyer commanders regretted missing the surface action and appear to have thought their participation would have shortened it. The ensuing portrait of British, Canadian, Australian, and American destroyer officers deliberately exaggerates their confidence in tackling much larger opponents. Their aggression coexisted with the professional duty to remain on the convoy screen.
