Built in Montreal as the British H6, the boat became the Dutch O 8 in 1917 and was scuttled during the German invasion in 1940. Germany raised the largely intact veteran and used it as the training submarine UD-1 before decommissioning it in 1943. The Germans scuttled the boat again in 1945 while trying to obstruct the Allied advance toward Kiel. Even an elderly submarine could retain value as a training platform after its combat utility had faded.
