Gustav III restores decision-making power

Gustav III's patience and political timing repair Sweden's executive weakness enough to challenge Catherine in the 1788-1790 war.

Notes

Sweden had transferred authority away from the monarchy without creating a legislative executive able to decide quickly during crises. Gustav III recovered enough personal control to organize the state and armed forces, combining ambition with better timing than his predecessors. His war against Russia had domestic political motives but also reflected genuine foreign-policy pressure. Sweden renewed its traditional Ottoman alliance but failed to secure full British, Dutch, or Prussian backing. An early plan to strike Saint Petersburg and trigger a coup against Catherine was abandoned because her position remained too secure. The conflict would expose both the strength of Catherine's navy and the danger of underestimating a younger opponent.
