How Argentine propaganda amplified fear of Gurkhas

Depicting Gurkhas as terrifying mercenaries helped create the fear that British imagery could then exploit.

Notes

Argentine propaganda portrayed Gurkhas as frightening mercenaries and condemned Britain for employing them. That portrayal also built them up in the minds of Argentine conscripts as exceptionally dangerous opponents. Images of Gurkhas sharpening kukris reinforced the reputation already circulating. The example illustrates how demonizing an enemy can strengthen that enemy's psychological effect when troops expect to meet them.
