Chapter · 44:20-45:58

Break up destroyer attacks before torpedo range

Long-range 6-inch fire and a compact battleship formation deny a large French destroyer force a viable torpedo approach.

Notes

The French destroyer numbers create a serious torpedo threat if they can close the range. Long-range 6-inch fire is used to disable the attackers before their torpedoes become effective. The battleships remain together and zigzag while lighter ships screen ahead instead of dispersing into individual chases. The battleships are also the ships most capable of surviving a torpedo hit if one gets through. Formation discipline, secondary gunnery, manoeuvre, and damage tolerance provide a layered defence against the massed light-force attack.
