The landship search formed part of a wider effort to overcome barbed wire, mud, and trench systems. Royal Navy gunboats operating along the Belgian coast showed how mobile platforms could carry powerful weapons close to the fighting. Army officers admired that effect but normally relied on artillery whose fire was delivered indirectly. Artillery remained the battlefield's dominant killer, so the comparison does not suggest that guns were obsolete. The design problem was to combine protected movement with direct fire at the obstacle line, a requirement that helped make an armoured tracked vehicle attractive.
