Gun layout creates forward-weight and stability penalties

Good firing arcs place guns high and forward, while torpedo mountings sit lower and impose a different arrangement problem.

Notes

On the 1,750-ton design, the guns and superstructure put too much weight forward even after the machinery has moved as far aft as possible. Gun destroyers face this problem more often than torpedo-led ships because their guns need elevated positions and good firing arcs. Torpedo launchers sit lower and closer to the hull, while superfiring guns push weight upward and toward the bow. An acceptable displacement can still produce an unusable ship when the weapons upset trim and stability.
