Adding folding wings to a gun-launched torpedo

Folding wings might extend the imagined torpedo's airborne phase, at the cost of space for the weapon itself.

Question

Could the gun-launched torpedo deploy wings at the top of its flight and glide toward the target?

Short answer

The proposal is accepted in principle, with a smaller torpedo suggested to make room; its torpedo function would still depend on entering the water.

Notes

The follow-up adds folding wings that would deploy near the top of the projectile's arc. An 18-inch torpedo is suggested in place of a larger weapon to fit the extra equipment. If it struck the ship while still airborne, its torpedo function would add little. Entering the water and attacking below the waterline would preserve its distinct purpose.
