Gun arcs make formation the opening tactical problem

Because their main batteries cannot all fire directly ahead, the four British battlecruisers must turn toward broadside and form a line before using their numerical advantage.

Notes

The numerical advantage cannot be used immediately because the British ships first have to present enough broadside to bring their distributed main batteries to bear. They also have to sort themselves into line while the opposing force approaches on a different heading. The game models the captains closing up formation quickly, but the historical problem lies in the relationship between turret arcs, course, and squadron cohesion. A turn made for gun power can squander concentration if the ships have not first organized their line.
