Guided fire magnifies the effect of rapid salvos

Reliable guidance would make repeated salvos more dangerous because follow-on shells could be launched before the result of the first hit was known.

Notes

The video imagines a protected guidance package whose casing drops away after launch and exposes control fins. A high aircraft or other designator could illuminate the target beyond the reach of the ship's antiaircraft guns. The resulting projectile would be lighter than a conventional full-calibre shell, reducing its damage per hit. At the same time, reliable guidance at very long range could place successive rounds on the same damaged area of armour. An autoloader magnifies that advantage because the second, third and fourth salvos may already be airborne before the first impact is assessed.
