Thirty Hellcats from Belleau Wood intercepted aircraft launching from Guam and nearby islands, with 35 Japanese losses reported for one Hellcat in the Guam action. The fighters were then recalled to rearm as a larger raid approached the fleet. The operational result was more important than the exchange ratio alone: Japan's separately commanded land-based air component ceased to be meaningful support for Ozawa's carriers.
