Chapter · 10:44-11:48

Why Guadeloupe mattered in February 1810

The opening places the invasion's truce and surrender in early February 1810 and connects the campaign to British amphibious forces and colonial marines.

Notes

Fighting ran from 28 January to 6 February, with a truce after the night battle of 3-4 February and surrender on 5 February. The anniversary frames the operation as a case study in marines, locally raised forces, and expeditionary warfare. A large, coherent contingent of Cochrane's colonial marines likely participated, but their continued existence at this date is debated. That caution affects any assessment of how British commanders combined regular troops with forces recruited and sustained in the Caribbean.
