Guadalcanal turns Japanese expansion into withdrawal

By the Guadalcanal campaign, Midway, Coral Sea, and growing Allied strength had turned Japanese expansion into a withdrawal toward a defensible line nearer Rabaul.

Notes

Japan's early expansion pushed its forces beyond sustainable support. In this interpretation, racial stereotypes among political and senior military leaders kept some accurate intelligence assessments of Japanese organization from shaping policy. During the Guadalcanal fighting, Japanese commanders withdrew troops while persuading the Americans that destroyer movements were reinforcement runs. The extraction was especially difficult because it required breaking contact without alerting the enemy. Its success shifted the next Allied objectives farther up the Solomon Islands chain.
