Guadalcanal exposed conquest without consolidation

Japan occupied a position that could threaten Allied supply routes but lacked the forces and lift needed to reinforce, supply, and use it before the Americans attacked.

Notes

Guadalcanal illustrates the difference between taking territory and consolidating it. Japan had advanced far enough to threaten Allied communications, yet could not reinforce or supply the island at the scale required to exploit that geography. The expansion resembles overfilling a plate at the first part of a buffet: early gains consumed capacity needed for everything that followed. Imperial overstretch becomes a practical logistics problem of garrisons, transport, and time rather than an abstract map of occupied territory.
