Greyhound's speed margin and balanced armament

Greyhound's speed margin over a 17-to-18-knot battle fleet made her gun-and-torpedo battery useful for attack and close fleet protection.

Notes

Greyhound's 30-knot speed gave her roughly twelve knots over her own battle line and thirteen over the roughly 17-knot formations described for other fleets. That margin let her overtake opponents and maneuver around the formation she protected. Her 12-pounder, five 6-pounders, and two 18-inch torpedo tubes supplied the defensive and offensive halves of the destroyer mission. The guns could engage torpedo boats and rival destroyers while the torpedoes preserved an attack capability against larger ships.
