Four Swedish frigates were captured at Grengam in 1720. Swedish accounts attributed their loss to grounding and claimed that 43 of the 61 Russian galleys were sunk or later burned and abandoned, while the Russian account described 42 galleys as damaged. Both sides therefore claimed victory from different readings of the losses. The operational assessment favours Russia because the battle allowed it to reinforce positions elsewhere in the war. Sweden had again committed a small mixed force against a much larger concentration, despite the need to defend its Finnish territories.
