Greenwich and the Royal Navy's uneven staff education

Technical education at Greenwich did not resolve the Royal Navy's inconsistent preparation of officers for staff work.

Notes

Greenwich offered mathematics, science, chemistry, and officer education, but it was not initially a modern staff college focused on operational coordination. The Royal Navy later created war and staff courses, then curtailed that activity during the First World War before giving it greater importance afterward. Even so, officers without formal staff education could still receive staff appointments while graduates were moved directly into independent commands. Commodore Michael Clapp's 1982 amphibious task-group staff is cited as a case in which subject-matter expertise compensated for gaps in formal team training. The example distinguishes expert knowledge from preparation to function together at task-group level.
