Chapter ยท 33:24-40:15

From Ottoman rule to the 1821 Greek revolt

A compact history traces four centuries of Ottoman rule, earlier failed revolts, the Society of Friends, and the premature uprising of 1821.

Notes

The revolt followed roughly four centuries of Ottoman rule and several failed Greek uprisings. The Society of Friends supplied the organization, while educated middle-class supporters provided time, networks, and political coordination. Discovery forced the planned 1821 revolt to begin early, producing mixed results across the Danubian Principalities and the Peloponnese. The original ambition to seize Constantinople alarmed Britain and France because Russian protection of such a Greek state could have transformed control of the Dardanelles.
