The voyage displayed American power and sharpened Australian interest in possessing its own navy and deployable maritime force. A foreign fleet demonstration could reshape the host country's defence debate as well as advertise the visitor's reach. The visit gave added force to demands that Australia control its own naval capability. Public spectacle therefore contributed to the institutional origins of the Royal Australian Navy.
