Grant under the tree after the first day's fighting

Grant's memoir describes rain, an injured ankle, an overwhelmed field hospital, and his resolve to attack again in the morning.

Notes

Grant recalled spending the stormy night beneath a tree near Pittsburg Landing because a swollen ankle prevented rest. He briefly entered a log house serving as a hospital, where amputations and the suffering of the wounded drove him back into the rain. Sherman found him there after what he called the devil's own day. Grant's reply that they would lick the Confederates tomorrow captures his confidence that the reinforced Union army could reverse the first day's retreat. Grant's determination to resume the attack coexisted with severe pain and the suffering immediately around his headquarters.
