Chapter ยท 0:48-1:54

Grand strategy beyond military force

Grand strategy connects the use or non-use of military force to the full range of national resources that make either choice possible.

Notes

Grand strategy attracts objections because it can seem pointless, burdened with negative associations, or needlessly grand. The distinction from military strategy gives it a practical boundary. Military strategy concerns the use or non-use of force, while grand strategy covers everything that makes those choices possible. Armed force depends on the state and society that create, support, and direct it, so military decisions cannot be understood in isolation.
