Training at Scapa Flow and the Jutland deployment

Repeated drills and exercises helped the Grand Fleet execute Jellicoe's difficult battle-line deployment at Jutland.

Notes

Life at the anchorage could be repetitive, but continuous drills, gunnery, and manoeuvring had clear operational value. That accumulated practice sharpened a large force's ability to act together. Scapa Flow's training regime helped the Grand Fleet deploy successfully into line at Jutland, a manoeuvre made difficult by the size and inertia of capital ships. Jellicoe completed the evolution twice under battle conditions, turning routine base work into tactical competence at sea.
