The 13.5-inch ships as the Grand Fleet's backbone

Why the Orion, King George V, and Iron Duke classes mattered at Jutland: mature ships, trained crews, and a dependable 13.5-inch-gun battle line.

Notes

The twelve 13.5-inch-gun dreadnoughts were the Grand Fleet's working backbone rather than merely an intermediate step before the 15-inch ships. Their main battery also continued a recurring British preference for 13.5-inch guns. Audacious had already been lost and Emperor of India was in routine maintenance, yet ten of the twelve ships built across the Orion, King George V, and Iron Duke classes were present at Jutland. Their crews had accumulated years of familiarity with their ships, while Royal Sovereign was held back through crew inexperience and several other newer battleships were fitting out, unlaunched, or under refit. Readiness and institutional memory were part of combat power alongside a ship's paper specifications. An older but mature class could therefore be more immediately useful than a more powerful design still being absorbed by the fleet.
