Graf Zeppelin's four-carrier plan overtaken by early war

Germany planned four carriers around an expected mid-1940s war, but the conflict began before that program could mature.

Notes

Germany's carrier plan called for four ships of the Graf Zeppelin type and assumed that a major war would not begin until the mid-1940s. The conflict instead arrived much earlier than the leadership expected. That timing left the carrier program confronting wartime demands before its ambitious construction plans had produced an operational force. A naval procurement schedule can be invalidated when political strategy brings war forward by several years.
