Göta Lejon, Chilean service, and the value of presence

Göta Lejon's long life leads into a discussion of how cruisers supported Sweden's merchant fleet, diplomacy, and defence exports abroad.

Notes

Göta Lejon entered service in 1947, left Swedish service in 1970, and then served Chile as Almirante Latorre until 1984. Together, Göta Lejon and Tre Kronor were the largest ships to serve in the Royal Swedish Navy. The Chilean career extended the class's operational life and carried Swedish guns and shipbuilding into another navy. During Swedish service, overseas cruiser deployments provided visible support for a large merchant fleet in an era when maritime security could not simply be assumed. The visits also strengthened reciprocal naval relationships and demonstrated Bofors weapons, Swedish steel, and domestic shipbuilding to foreign navies.
