Kuznetsov reached Soviet naval command at thirty-four

Cruiser command, service in Spain, and an appointment to the Pacific Fleet preceded Kuznetsov's promotion to head the Soviet Navy at thirty-four.

Notes

Nikolai Kuznetsov built his entire naval career within the Soviet service and reached its highest command before his thirty-fifth birthday. He joined the Northern Dvina flotilla in 1919, graduated from naval school in 1926, and gained much of his early experience aboard cruisers. After junior service in Chervona Ukraina and an executive-officer post in Krasny Kavkaz, he returned to command Chervona Ukraina in 1934. Service as naval adviser in Spain during 1936 and 1937 took him away from the center of the purges, and a subsequent Pacific Fleet appointment again kept him at a distance. Accounts that he saved other officers are treated cautiously, alongside uncertainty about the compromises involved in surviving. His appointment demonstrates both rapid promotion and how much practical responsibility could fall on a relatively young survivor.
