Gorshkov's Black Sea amphibious apprenticeship

Sergey Gorshkov's wartime commands linked flotillas, landings, army support, and political relationships before he became the architect of a global Soviet fleet.

Notes

Gorshkov first appears as a wartime commander in the Black Sea and Sea of Azov, years before he became an advocate of oceanic power. He led landing forces around Odessa, commanded flotillas during withdrawals and assaults, supported the North Caucasian Front, and prepared troops for the Kerch-Eltigen operation. His commands repeatedly joined small warships to army operations, river crossings, coastal movement, and amphibious attack. These campaigns also placed him near Nikita Khrushchev's political interests in Ukraine and the Black Sea. Decorations, promotion to vice admiral, and repeated mention in Stalin's orders show how strongly the operations advanced his standing. This coastal and joint-warfare apprenticeship shaped the commander who later pursued a global fleet.
