Gorgon under return fire off Belgium

Gorgon bombarded German batteries and bridges in occupied Belgium, absorbing splinters from near misses while continuing her fire-support missions.

Notes

HMS Gorgon bombarded German artillery positions and bridges in occupied Belgium during the First World War. Her missions combined counter-battery work with attacks on the enemy's communications. Heavy return fire repeatedly straddled the monitor, and splinters from near misses struck her, but the missions continued. Gorgon later fired the Royal Navy's final rounds against targets in occupied Belgium during the war.
