Why good-enough ships can win wars

Mass-produced destroyers and escorts show why sufficient capability in useful numbers can beat technical perfection.

Question

Which navies would benefit most from more ships that were good enough rather than exceptional?

Short answer

Every major navy benefited from practical mass production, but Germany would have gained most from more usable hulls and greater numbers.

Notes

Technically exceptional ships are less useful if they cannot be produced, crewed, and maintained at scale. American destroyers were not the most advanced ships industry could imagine, but they could be built in the quantities the fleet required. British Hunt-class escort destroyers and Flower-class sloops likewise turned sufficient capability into usable wartime force structure. Germany would have benefited especially from more practical numbers rather than a focus on fewer ambitious ships.
