Goeben and the Mediterranean capital-ship balance

The opening exchange uses Goeben's Mediterranean deployment to show how prestige, local force balance, and supporting cruisers shaped the value and vulnerability of a lone battlecruiser.

Notes

Goeben's usefulness depended on what the Royal Navy actually stationed in the Mediterranean and what supporting forces could join a fight. A British battlecruiser backed by armored and light cruisers could have imposed a much harder tactical problem than a duel between nominally comparable capital ships. Queen Mary is offered as the kind of ship that could have made short work of Goeben with that wider support. Overseas presence and force packaging mattered alongside a ship's paper specifications.
