Hugh G. Singer's survival report after HMS Gloucester

An official-report passage captures a survivor's understated account of spending a day and night in the water after HMS Gloucester sank.

Notes

Lieutenant Commander Hugh G. Singer's official report preserves a dry first impression after HMS Gloucester sank during the Battle of Crete. Entering the water, he initially found it agreeably warm. A day and night of immersion soon showed that water pleasant for bathing was no safe place to wait for rescue. The understated wording puts a human experience beside operational accounts of the ship's loss and shows what official reports can preserve beyond movements and casualty totals.
