Glorious develops a night torpedo plan that Pound rejects

Night flying, torpedoes and flares formed the attack concept, but Pound considered the projected losses unacceptable.

Notes

Glorious's planners chose darkness because a daylight approach left little chance of getting close enough and surviving. Torpedoes supplied the intended striking power, while dropped flares would illuminate the harbour and distract heavy anti-aircraft guns. The staff calculated a casualty estimate that Pound rejected as too optimistic. He judged the damage to the air arm prohibitive and put the plan away without forwarding it to Whitehall.
