Alexander Hood's Royal George cut between Républicain and Sans Pareil, and Glory followed into the same melee. Much of the surrounding rear remained at long range. Montagu's limited action followed Captain James Montagu's death in the opening exchanges, which left the inexperienced Lieutenant Ross Donnelly in command. Alfred and Majestic also stayed distant, with Majestic later accepting surrenders, while Thunderer initially failed to engage despite flying the close-action signal. Scipion drifted into the close fight through sailing difficulties. Royal George and Glory helped disable Sans Pareil and Scipion but were initially too damaged to take possession. Sans Pareil eventually became a British prize and remained in British hands until her breakup in 1842.
