Queen and Orion concentrated on Northumberland, determined to recover her for British service. They bore down together and dismasted her before turning toward other opponents. Northumberland's surrender was secured later as the shattered ships between the fleets were gathered. The desire to recover the ship added a symbolic motive to the fight for possession.
