Howe needed to reach Montagu before the French battle fleet could find his detached squadron. Montagu had eight 74-gun ships and one 64, accompanied by two frigates. That was a useful independent force, but it was too small to face Villaret-Joyeuse's fleet, particularly with Nielly's reinforcements. Howe's search therefore also aimed to prevent an isolated British squadron from meeting a much stronger enemy.
