The grain crisis behind the Atlantic campaign

France's failed harvest turned an American grain convoy into a strategic target for the Royal Navy.

Notes

Mobilizing large armies removed people from productive work in France and contributed to a collapse in the grain harvest. French agents bought American grain and organized a convoy to bring it across the Atlantic. British interception of correspondence revealed the plan. British planners intended to let France spend the money, then intercept the grain on its return journey. They hoped renewed scarcity would provoke another revolution and weaken France from within.
