Several captains felt that their actions had not received adequate recognition. Cuthbert Collingwood, Barfleur's flag captain, refused awards for later service until he received the Glorious First of June medal. It came after the Battle of Cape St Vincent in 1797. Much later, the battle qualified for a clasp to the Naval General Service Medal. Surviving British participants could apply in 1847, more than five decades after the action.
