Brunswick's point-blank fight with Vengeur

When Brunswick became entangled with Vengeur du Peuple, Captain John Harvey chose to hold on and fight at almost point-blank range.

Notes

John Harvey pushed Brunswick forward after a rebuke from Howe, although whether this was serious criticism or teasing between men who knew each other remains disputed. He tried to reach Jacobin to support Queen Charlotte, then attempted to pass between Achille and Vengeur du Peuple. Brunswick's anchors caught Vengeur's rigging, and Harvey rejected the sailing master's suggestion to cut loose. The ships swung so close that Brunswick's crew could not open their gunport covers against the opposing hull. They pressed the cannon against the closed ports and fired through the covers to continue the point-blank fight.
