Army troops, boarding actions, and prize money

Short of marines, the Royal Navy used army regiments aboard ship, where prize money made naval service unusually attractive.

Notes

Short of marines, the Royal Navy placed troops from the Queen's and 29th regiments aboard ships, where they took part in boarding actions. Prize money mattered at every rank, and officers and men resisted returning to ordinary army duty after sharing in the proceeds. Their collective protest came close to a small mutiny. The regiments' later descendants were said to be entitled to the Glorious First of June as a battle honour, although the recollection is qualified. Prize shares also gave some officers with sufficient service the money needed to purchase promotion.
